THE VAIC 52B ART

Part II

THE BURDEN OF ROCK AND ROLL CONSCIOUSNESS

TRUST ME: An "A" rock and roll producer calls me up and wants to hear his latest CD of an "A" rock and roll act he just produced on my system.

After only a few bars he started to blush, and said.."I never knew that…blah, blah, blah".

How is it possible that after hundreds of hours of recording and mixing music in an "A" studio this producer heard for the first time "stuff" he never heard before on his own work of art?

What does that mean about what the rock and roll public is hearing?

What does it mean that a very small group of passionate rock and roll connoisseurs may "know" more about the music they are listening to than the artist who created it, or the producer who mixed it?

THE NEW ROCK AND ROLL SAVANT

In every activity there is a hierarchy of experience and tools.

It is important here to point out there is also a group of men who suffer with a serious "experiential" impediment that prevents them from surrendering to the ecstasy of art, and they compensate by buying expensive toys.

But the over-riding good news is that over the decades a new group of men, "rock and roll savants" have emerged and they demand to "know" in the full sense of how the word is used in the Old Testament, to "know" rock and roll.

These savant demands a relationship to their rock and roll that 99.9999999% don't understand, in the same way that 99.99999% don't know the difference between transistors and tubes, or pentodes and directly heated triodes.

How can I explain this passion to the experience the highest dimension of rock and roll? In the same way I can explain how young boys, who once thought bubble gum was the finest flavor, grow up and discover they prefer the taste of Beluga caviar and champagne. For some men, taste evolves, because consciousness evolves, and if you have it, you have no choice.

You are blessed and cursed. What is the curse? If you can assert "I have been to the mountain", what do you do after that?

My job, if you have the right stuff, is to show you a path to the top of the rock and roll mountain. There are many paths. Some go higher than others. It is also a mistake to take a path that takes you beyond your safety range because there is danger of knowing too much, too soon.

The good news is that you are NOT only not alone, but the journey has been going on for a very long time, because rock and roll is as old as consciousness.

A perfect example of what I am talking about is illustrated by a quote from a fax I received from the now eternal Nobu Shishido, one of Japan’s master of audiomania:

" We have been experimenting on what a amp can be as a form of art, sound-wise, design-wise, and construction-wise. We no longer see an amp as just a tool to produce sound but see it as a work of art in its entirety. You can say it's a sculpture which also produces sound, if you like; an experimental proposal to the culture of future world of audio. The way it differs from just sculpture is that this sculpture has to be constructed in a way to improve sound also. So it ’s a delicate combination of art and technology...."
